Innsbruck from Aldrans

I drove up to Manuela's today to have my nails done. This time I took the camera and got to take this photo from Aldrans, looking down on Innsbruck.

Jim went skiing at Kühtai, which he says has become his favorite place, and he bought himself a season pass. He will write about the skiing himself in a comment to this blog.

I had Mohn-Nudeln for lunch. (Noodles with poppy seeds and sugar) Have to admit, it is a weird thing. I think maybe one of the weirder things I've eaten, but strangely satisfying. Here is the recipe for those of you who might be interested. Manuela tells me that it is her 4-year old's favorite dish.

MOHNNUDELN

1 medium potato
About 1/2 cup of flour
2 tablespoons butter
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup of milk
1 teaspoon salt
ground poppy seeds
powdered sugar
melted butter to pour on top

Peel the potato and chop in small pieces. Boil until cooked then mash. Mash the butter into the potato. Add flour, egg, milk, salt, and mix. The dough should be soft, but should not stick when handled. If it does, add more flour. Take dough and roll into sausage-like shapes (a bit like elongated gnocchi). Boil the noodles in salted water. They are ready when they float. Liberally apply poppy seed and sugar mixture (there should be quite a lot) and pour melted butter over.

Yesterday's skiing at Axamer Lizum was just okay. A fair bit of wind (enough to shut some lifts) and flat light made it less than optimal. A minor bit of excitement yesterday came when I spotted two telemark skiers, the first I've seen since we arrived a month ago. They were young and aggressive. I first saw them skiing under the chair that I was riding. Later, one of them zoomed by me at very high speed, pretty close to the fall line, and had a spectacular wipeout just before reaching the lift. I also enjoyed watching a high-speed yard sale on a headwall. The guy was barreling down the slope when I looked back over my shoulder. A couple of seconds later, he was just ahead of me and 30 feet over. Next thing I know, he is just a big white puff of dust. His poles are no longer attached, and one pole and one ski are flying through the air 10 feet up from the ground and perpendicular. Wow! The guy was spinning on the ground at high speed.

Today at Kühtai was a different story. Cooler (-5°C when I started), but sunny and with a good amount of fresh powder from overnight. I bought a season pass this morning. Kühtai has become my favorite spot because of the snow (base elevation is 2000m), large expanse of terrain, and the incredible variety of off-piste skiing with good lift access. I could find relatively untracked powder all day long. Another telemarker was spotted, again from a lift, which is too bad because I can't find them again. One of my bindings was causing trouble this morning, releasing while I was skiing (which is not what tele bindings are supposed to do). I made some adjustments that lasted the rest of the day, and fixed it at home at the end of the day. As usual, I entertained quite a few questions from people about what kind of skis I was on, and even had one couple follow me off the lift to watch. Of course I had to wipe out within 15 seconds while they were being entertained!

The breakeven on the ski pass is 13 days of skiing, which should be easy to manage over the next 2 months. The question is whether I should also pick up a season pass for Schlick 2000, which also has fabulous skiing. I do like having some variety, and have never had a season pass to tie me down to a single area before.
